I have the external oil filter that goes where the oil pump is, you know the one that came in the Super Beetles and it works great!! Less travel for the oil and didn't have to drill into my case!!

"I" tapped MY engine case...$35...installed an oil cooler with a thermostatic controlled fan ( 185 degrees) and an external oil filter with all steel braided lines...MY car would get HOT in the summer months and EVEN in October!!! Now it has yet to reach OVER 180. Ask ANYBODY..."I" drive the HELL outta my VW AND I tow a teardrop trailer behind her ! At first, I was VERY sceptical about ALL that extra oil and expense and just HOW much cooler it would make my motor run......WELL....I'm a BELIEVER NOW !! If you are going to drive to Las Vegas this year, you'll be WISE to keep yer oil COOL and "I" don't want to see you on the side of the freeway on the way there !!

Bobert, you should think about putting a over ride switch on the fan. If for some reason the thermo switch doesnt work, then you have the switch to hit and run the fan. I like having a backup plan. Did that with my elec fans for my V8 S10.

Kevin, That's what I did with a '61 I used to have. I had a 1914cc on it and I had a switch to turn it on and off whenever I wanted plus it had the thermostatic control as well. I had another bug with a 2180cc and similar setup but I had the fan connected with the ignition switch on this one!

Just nice to have a backup in case the thermo switch dies on ya. Do you have a temp gauge also? Otherwise a switch is useless if you dont know what temp it is. Could always put it in the glove box, but thats one of those upgrades, that although no og, is almost a necessity, or is now that your depending on a switch that may give out eventualy.

Tapping the Case:
Put grease on the tap. Remove it and clean off the shavings often and you should be fine.
