(Keith Birmingham / Staff Photographer)EL MONTE - In September 2010 Hector Urias, a beloved community figure, was discovered shot to death in the auto shop he owned in El Monte.
As plans come together for an auction this weekend at Hector Urias Auto Repair to sell off the mechanic and avid drag racer's tools and racing gear, detectives are still on the hunt for the person who took his life.
"We do have investigative leads and they're being looked into, but obviously we can't release the leads," said El Monte Police Detective George Fierro.
The department is working alongside Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives to find the killer, Fierro said.
As they do, community members and Urias' family are prepping for an auction, where dozens of Urias' tools will be for sale.
The funds from the auction will benefit the family Urias left behind - his wife Sandra and the daughter they were scheduled to officially adopt the day after he was killed - Makayla, who is now 2 years old.
"Whatever money is raised will go to his widow and his daughter," said former El Monte Police Chief Ken Weldon, who is helping with the fundraiser. "He had an extensive array of tools and racing parts. He was a top-notch race car driver, so we're hoping to get a crowd and help the family."
On the long list of items to be sold are socket sets, a floor jack, an oil changer, engine stands, tool boxes, compressors, engine lift and more.
The auction also gives

friends, colleagues and family the opportunity to own something of Urias', family said.
"They all wanted to have a piece to remember him," said Urias' sister Eva Urias. "A lot of friends from the race community and the El Monte community wanted to purchase something that he had at the shop that meant a lot to him."
The family is also selling the auto repair business at 3548 Santa Anita Ave.
Urias was discovered by a family member shot to death inside the shop on Sept.
8, 2010 after he did not return to his La Verne home the night before.
A November 2010 autopsy report determined that Urias died from a gunshot wound to his back. That same month, investigators, who said it appeared that a struggle took place the night of the shooting, released a sketch of a man believed to have more information on what happened there.
The witness later contacted police.
"As a result of the witness, we've developed investigative leads that we're following up on," Fierro said.
Eva Urias said the family is confident that investigators will find her brother's killer.
"We feel very confident that yes, something will prevail... we're just hoping that something there were good leads that will lead us to who did this," Eva said while she was babysitting her niece Makayla, whom she referred to as the family's "little blessing."
Registration and inspection of items to be sold at Saturday's the auction is from 8 to 10 a.m. at Hector Urias Auto Repair, 3548 Santa Anita, with the auction immediately following.
