Local car-racing champion killed in El Monte auto shop

EL MONTE - A man was shot and killed at an auto shop in El Monte Wednesday morning, police said.

Police responded to an auto shop in the 3500 block of Santa Anita Avenue at 6:29 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said.

The shooting occurred at 5:45 a.m., deputies said.

The man killed was Hector Urias, a family man who enjoyed auto racing and had one of the fastest Volkswagon Beetles around, said friend Bob Elias.

"He was such a good guy," Elias said. "I don't know that this guy had any enemies."

Elias, a drag racer, knew Urias from the racing community, he said.

In addition, their wives work together at a local elementary school, he said.

He said the Urias family was just about to finalize an adoption.

I heard there is a memorial for Hector at Irwindale tonite.
Anybody else hear the same thing?

I also heard, i thought it was scheduled for next week. I saw Arty had posted something on the DHK forum regarding next week. I can not be 100% sure. I will follow up. Roscoe just check the DHK forum, Herb posted for next week the 16th @ the race track..
It would be great to see all the VW Community come out and show some luv and support for the family..
