Hey everyone, Semi-new member here.
Ok, so I've searched around the forums and picked up some good info on my 1835 that I have in my 1968 Bug, and now I'm to the point where I'm trying to decide exactly where I should go on my new engine build (rebuilding the 1835 or making the change to 1776).
So far, this is where I'm at... I have the 1835 that's only a few years old (dual kadrons, 110 cam, etc) and I've heard a lot of argument towards the 1776 being a better motor as a daily driver over the 1835 (Due to thinner cyl walls and heat buildup) and I'm seriously considering the change to a 1776. My main concern with continuing to run a 1835 is the fact that someone decided to cut the rear end in a Baja style cut but they left the rear fenders on and put a 1966 rear deck lid over the motor (of which I only use in winter since it seems to keep the motor cooler when there is no hood). I'm planning on running fenderless in the rear in some time ( probably when I leave CA for WA next year) and I'm hoping that will help get some fresh air back into my motor and cool things down.
Another reason I'm thinking about the change to 1776 from 1835 is the fact that I'm using my bug as a daily driver in the week and as a toy racecar on the weekends. Being a daily driver I want reliability, but being a race driver by nature and using the car as the occasional auto-x car I'd still like to have that extra power over a 1600...
I've been looking at parts and have decided my factory Brazilian FEBI heads probably won't cut it and I was looking into the ported CB Performance Los Panchito heads which I think are based off the 043 Mexican head? As I'm currently running a bastardized set of dual Kads I'm more than likely going to run a set of new dual 40IDFs (as the saying goes, you only go as fast as your checkbook is big). I am currently running a 009 points ignition but I have the intent of going to a MSD setup in the future (I've used MSD in most my racecar and loved their ignitions). Now with this setup I was guessing on going up to a 120 cam, would I be correct in assuming such? Could going to electronic spark make a difference in my parts choice?
Another thing of concern to me is my choice in tin, I have a latemodel doghouse style cooler and tin, but I will be replacing the tin as it's cheaper than cleaning it up. Is there any tin combo that runs cooler than stock without breaking my wallet? Are under cylinder tins worth it/do they work? Most the reason I ask is because my 1835 oval the rear 2 cylinders out early and also cracked both cylinder heads prematurely (I know it's life in a type1 without 3/4 reach plugs).
Any tips/tricks or suggestions/answers y'all have for me would be greatly appreciated.
