I am a friend of Mike, the dude with the wicked fast splitty. I am also a racer and I have a 1974 Thing, that I am installing an 1835 with dual 40mm Webers. My race car is a 1968 ZINK Formula Vee, my average speed on a 1.8 mile course is only 56mph. But I have a ton of fun with only 1200cc: "G"

Hell, MY 40 horse would take nearly a MILE to get to 55mph ! THAT seems a bit SLOW for a light kit car...But WELCOME to So.Cal. and some of the FUNNEST people you'll ever meet !

Welcome to the forum Mike. You have a couple of nice rides. How many laps is the course? What engine you have on that thing right now or before the 1835cc? Hope to see you here often.

My name is Gary, Mike is my friend. The Thing ran a stock 1600 with Pict34. The 1835 is built and ready to go in I am installing a Ghia tranny (better gear ratio for highway). Right now everything is pulled out from under car and I am cleaning and painting underneath before reassembly. As to the racing it is a road course with 14 turns, (left and right turns). Average speed is 56 but down the front straight I have been clocked at close to 100mph. The race is to make as many laps as possible in 20 minutes. I currently race with two other cars in the same class and they mix us in with other formula cars such as Mazdas and Fords. "G"

Sorry Gary for calling you Mike. Do you have pictures of your thing process? If you do post them so we can see them. Also on you other car, do you have pictures of you while racing? I bet that's a lot of fun. How often do you race?

NP, we race once a month from Oct till May. Too hot here to race in the summer. Racing pics aren't that good. We really can't get a camera close enought to the track to see anything.
My Thing has under gone several mods. The latest was to Jack it up and put on the big tires. Right now I am letting it back down to normal ride height and rehabing the rear suspension.
Do you have a project page? I post pics until you guys yell UNCLE. :-)

I see you are in Orange County, how far is that from Long Beach? Pretty much next door. I'm actually in Westminster (Orange County) and that's about 10 (more or less) miles from Long Beach.

I saw Mike a few weeks ago at our local Golden Oldies Show. He has a turbo now. He had to rebuild the engine because the stress cracked the block. He replaced the VW block with an aluminum block.
