This post is about my 1967 Autodynamics Formula Vee Race Car. I bought the car intending to race it in vintage races. Since the nearest vintage races are over 500 miles away, it is no longer practical we are evaluating the future use of this car. I do all my own welding and powder coating in my shop.

1 JAN 2007

I had to reinstall the oil cooler to meet vintage requirements. Bobby and I removed the doghouse, generator and intake manifold. All of the upper cylinder tin was also removed.

The oil filler has a highway tube that vents crankcase gases to the road. This is not allowed on any class of racing. All crankcase vents must go to a collection bottle.

This highway tube is common to all early model Volkwagen engines and must be removed:


The tube has been cut off and the hole welded up:


To aid and improve crankcase ventilation I added vent tubes to the valve covers.


The engine tin has flanges that are not needed on a race car so I used the plasma cutter to remove them.

I didn't know that about vintage racing. You learn something everyday. if you did anything e;se to it post it so we can check it out. great job Gary, I wish I can do all that myself but I'm not very gifted in that area.

All race cars are requred to have a catch bottle for the transmisson, and engine. The idea is to keep oil off the track. The water cooled cars are not allowed to run anti-freeze because it is much more slippery than plain water.

As to being gifted, it is just like learning anything else. My first attempts at powder coating were nothing to brag about.

Did you buy a powder coat booth or did you make ont and how big is it? What do you need to do powder coating? Because I like to learn and do my own. Thanks Gary in advance!

I use an electic stove / oven that my wife gave me when I got her a new one. A friend of mine used a toaster oven. (small parts only)

The powder coating kit came from Eastwood. You will need a small air compressor also.
