Hey Will!! Sorry to hear about your bug!!
1) Did the red light in your speedometer go on as you were driving?
2) How is the carburation on your bug? Is the idle set properly? It seems like if it were electrical you might not have been able to get your car going again. For example if it were your points and condenser or your coil. But if the idle is to low when you come to a stop there isn't sufficient fuel reaching your engine and the motor dies and bug turns off. When you tried restarting it Did you step on the gas pedal? (as we all do to get it started?) If you did you gave the engine fuel again. Drove it and let it come to idle again and it turned off. Try adjusting your idle screw and let your carbs give a little more gas. Let me know how it goes, and post if you need more help.

Take a CLOSE look at yer little RED wire that connects to the STARTER...if that little devil is LOOSE( bad connection) yer car will act like there is NO starter..no elec, Make SURE that little connecter is TIGHT! Did it act like it's a dead battery when it wouldn't start ? Turn the key and NOTHING ? Well, that is a definite indicator that the little red wire is is loose or OFF. It's a bit of a TIGHT area to get to that wire connector and squeeze it tight...DO NOT squeeze it too tight though or you'll have a helluva time fixing THAT !

Hey will remove your air filter and have someone step on the gas pedal as you look into the chanmber of the carb. There is a small tube kind of in a candy cane shape, see if it squirts fuel if it does then it is not clogged and it might be your idle jet. It wouldn't hurt to rebuild your carb I try do to it every six months. If the idle jet gets clogged when you come to idle not enough fuel is delivered and your bug turns off.
but for now you can turn up your idle with the idle adjustment screw turn it out a half turn at a time till you get a nice idle. The idle screw is the large one of the two on the left side of the carb. Try not to turn the small one that one is your air bypass screw. Hope it help if you need help call me you got my number!!
